The OCHEP was created as a Health Careers Exploration Program where students were introduced to the wide-range of career opportunities available at a hospital. The 8-week program allowed students grades 8 to 12 the opportunity to visit facilities, speak with professionals, develop educational pathways, and learn/practice healthy habits. As part of the program, students produced documents (such as resumes and cover letters) with the help of career professionals that are currently working for institutions in healthcare.
The program strived to introduce these multi-lingual LCSD students to multiple healthcare related fields and occupations which included nursing, mental health specialities,, dietary/nutrition, radiology/imaging, healthcare technology, plant operations/engineering, and business operations.
It was understood that there was the possibility that not all participants would ultimately choose to pursue a career in healthcare; but, by immersing students in the environment, with professionals, and prepared to grow, students could make better informed decisions for future careers.
This program was truly made possible by the hard work and efforts of the following partners: Oregon Coast STEM Hub, Samaritan Health, Oregon State University Extension, The Ollala Center, Oregon Coast Community College, the Workforce Investment Board, and Lincoln County School District. These partners created memorable, educational opportunities for the students.
Samaritan Health is a proactive partner with Oregon Coast Community College and Lincoln County School District in forming partnership opportunities for students with interests in healthcare fields. Samaritan Health frequently speaks with educational partners along the coast to develop programs and opportunities for students to get career experiences. Katie Jensen, a Samaritan Health Talent Development Program Manager participates and helps create amazing career awareness, exploration, and preparation activities.
